Extended periods of silent retreat, involving many sessions of silent sitting per day, have been a main stay of every spiritual tradition in recorded history.
Long periods of silence settle the thinking process, bringing a clarity that is not only outwardly directed: towards our priorities in the world, but also inwardly directed: towards our true nature. That is only the esoteric aspect of silence. It also has an esoteric aspect.
We’ve heard a lot in recent decades about the power of intention and manifesting. It rarely works. People set their intention to create more money, get better relationships, even healing the body. But the majority of those intentions either do nothing at all, or evoke a flurry of resistance.
Many thousands of years ago, Arjuna (from the Bhagavad Gita), was seeking a “boon” from the Gods. He was looking for a specific outcome. In this myth, he is instructed to sit silently for twelve years, and at the end of that time the boon is granted. This kind of story runs through every tradition, where a certain kind of penance or ritual is required to have a certain outcome.
Silence is the mileau in which intention finds its fulfillment.
Please join Arjuna Ardagh and a group of graduates from our recent silent retreat, discussing the power of silence.
