Has it happened for you sometimes that you try to do all the right things, say all the right things, take responsibility for your experience and still you are faced with a feeling of painful separation in relationships? Many years ago, the great teacher J. Krishnamurti said “wherever there are two present, there will be suffering.” What does it mean?

Deeper than the things that we say, the things that we do, the way that we listen, the gifts that we buy, is the space in which the relationship is occurring. The more spaciousness that surrounds a relationship, the more you feel that you and the other are becoming one and the greater the level of intimacy. A mother breast-feeding a baby: easily the mother and baby merge into oneness and this is a highly intimate relationship. Making love: another time for all of us when we experience boundaries dissolving and of course, it is also a highly intimate situation.

Intimacy is not only a function of how well you know somebody, or the result of what you do or say. It is a function of the degree of spaciousness in which the meeting is occurring. The more space you discover within yourself, the less there is a me and a you, and the higher the degree of intimacy
